Steven Shih Chen (traditional Chinese: 駿; simplified Chinese: ; pinyin: Chén Shìjùn; born August 18, 1978) is an American Internet entrepreneur. He is one of the co-founders and previous chief technology officer of the video-sharing website YouTube. After having co-founded the company AVOS Systems, Inc. and built the video-sharing app MixBit,[1] he joined Google Ventures in 2014.[2]

Early years and education

Chen was born in Taipei, Taiwan. When he was fifteen, he and his family immigrated to the United States[3] and settled in Prospect Heights, Illinois.[4] He went to River Trails Middle School in Mount Prospect for his middle school education and John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights for his freshman year of high school. For his final three years of high school, he attended the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he studied computer science. He graduated in 2002.

Business career

Chen was an employee at the industry financial company PayPal, where he first met Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim. Chen was also an early employee at Facebook, although he left after several months to start YouTube.[5]
In 2005, Chad Hurley, Jawed Karim and Chen founded YouTube, with Chen having the position of chief technology officer. In June 2006, Chen was named by Business 2.0 as one of "The 50 people who matter now" in business.[6]
On October 16, 2006, Chen and Hurley sold YouTube to Google, Inc. for $1.65 billion. Chen received 625,366 shares of Google and an additional 68,721 in a trust as part of the sale. As of 2018, the Google shares are valued at $729 million.[7]
He and Hurley started AVOS Systems which acquired Delicious from Yahoo! Inc.
Chen was listed as one of the 15 Asian Scientists To Watch by Asian Scientist Magazine on 15 May 2011.[8]
Chen started the live streaming food network called Nom.com in 2016 along with Vijay Karunamurthy.[9] It was noted in 2017 that the live streaming food network was stealthily shut down, with its Twitter feed switched to private and Facebook account left idle since March, 2017.[10]

Chen was inducted as a Laureate of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois and awarded the Order of Lincoln (the State’s highest honor) by the Governor of Illinois in 2018. [11]

Chen married Park Ji-hyun, who is now Jamie Chen, a Google Korea product marketing manager, in 2009. They live in San Francisco with their two children. One son was born in July 2010.[12] The Chens are major supporters of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco where Jamie was appointed a trustee in July 2012.

Why Ireland is VITAL to PRESIDENT Joe Biden.

There is almost nothing that the polarised politicians in Washington can agree on these days. Bipartisan co-operation is extremely hard to find. That is with respect to an American editor Sara Smith. But there is one issue on which just about everyone sees eye to eye. And that is the value of the Good Friday Agreement (GFA), which ended 30 years of deadly violence in Northern Ireland.  The agreement itself is seen as a shining example of what can be achieved by determined diplomacy and careful negotiation.  American politicians are rightly proud of the role the US played in securing the peace. The tireless work of Senator George Mitchell as well as the intense engagement of President Bill Clinton were essential. President Biden sees the agreement as part of his own political legacy and can claim    credit   for encouraging US involvement in the peace process through the 1980s and 90s. Defending the GFA, and the relative peace it ensures, has been a h...

How AI turned a Ukrainian YouTuber into a Russian

How AI turned a Ukrainian YouTuber into a Russian “I don't want anyone to think that I ever said these horrible things in my life. Using a Ukrainian girl for a face promoting Russia. It's crazy.” Olga Loiek has seen her face appear in various videos on Chinese social media - a result of easy-to-use generative AI tools available online. “I could see my face and hear my voice. But it was all very creepy, because I saw myself saying things that I never said,” the 21-year-old, who studies at the University of Pennsylvania, told the BBC. The accounts featuring her likeness had dozens of different names like Sofia, Natasha, April, and Stacy. These “girls” were speaking in Mandarin - a language Olga had never learned. They were apparently from Russia, and talked about China-Russia friendship or advertised Russian products. “I saw like 90% of the videos were talking about China and Russia, China-Russia friendship, that we have to be strong allies, as well as advertisements for food.” O...

What to expect from the 2024 Democratic National Convention

With just three months to go before the 2024 election, thousands are set to gather in Chicago this week for the Democratic National Convention. It’s a tradition dating back to the 1830s, when a group of Democratic delegates supporting President Andrew Jackson gathered in Baltimore to nominate him for a second term. This year will look slightly different from others, as the Democratic Party has already officially nominated Vice-President Kamala Harris in a virtual roll call after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. But many of the other DNC traditions - including appearances from celebrities and memorable speeches from party leaders - will remain the same. Here’s what to know. What happens at the DNC? Because Ms Harris and Mr Walz have already been nominated, this year’s convention will focus on speeches from prominent Democrats and the adoption of the party’s platform. Delegates work during the day to finalise the platform, a draft of which has already been released. It focuse...
